Stretch marks (in medical terms grouped under the term striae) occur when the skin is stretched beyond it’s normal limits. They can appear as lines or ridges on the skin and can vary in colour between red and purple. They can also match the natural skin tone or be slightly darker than it. Stretch marks can appear on all areas of the body; but are most commonly seen on the arms, back, breasts, buttocks and stomach.
What causes Stretch Marks?
As the name suggests, stretch marks are caused when the skin gets stretched for a prolonged period of time due to any number of factors. The stretching can weaken the skin and result in the appearance of stretch marks – some may find that this process comes with a slight burning or itching sensation. Some of the most common causes of stretch marks are when the body undergoes change such as during pregnancy, weight loss or weight gain and bodybuilding.

The skin tightening system that we offer at Hannah London is that of the industry standard Soprano Near Infrared Laser (or NIR for short). This handheld device is used by our therapist on your skin to apply a focused beam of light and heat to the target area(s). To target the appearance of stretch marks, the device gently punctures the skin area and encourages the new layer to be filled with natural elastin fibres. These help to improve your skin laxity and therefore tighten it. Click here to learn more about the Dermapen treatment on its dedicated webpage.
